BTS (방탄소년단)

BTS or Bangtan Sonyeon Dan has 7 members and is one of the most successful K-Pop groups of all time. Since they come from a not-so-big entertainment agency, they managed to attract the attention of many foreign fans. The size of their fan base, the Army, is huge and has allowed them to win the Top Social Artist title two years in a row at the Billboard Music Awards with over 300 million votes.

Their songs have reached the Billboard Hot 100 and their album Love Yourself: Tear debuted at number one, making them the first Korean group to top the US album charts. A factor that sets BTS apart from most K-Pop groups and the reason why they are popular is that they produce their own songs.

iKon is a 7-member group formed through survival competitions called WIN: Who Is Next and Mix & Match. From the group's debut, their first studio album topped the charts in Korea. Since then, they are known for many popular singles. They are also known for writing and producing their own songs.

Their song titled Love Scenario 사랑을 했다 (sarangeul haetda) was a hit in early 2018. It was so popular that even elementary school students could be heard singing it, even though when asked, they could not explain the exact meaning of the song.

Seventeen (세븐틴)

Seventeen is literally one of the largest boy groups the K-Pop industry has ever seen, with 13 members. This places them on the same level as the group Super Junior in terms of size. The group is signed under Pledis Entertainment, which initially planned to have 17 members. However, 4 of them left even before the group debuted. They consist of 3 sub-units that perform according to their specialization: hip-hop, vocal, and performance. They always live up to their name Seventeen with 13 members plus 3 units, making them a unique group.

They never fail to give their fans quality music that they compose and produce themselves.

Girls' Generation is best known for its cross-cultural appeal (it signed with a Japanese label in 2010 to make its music more accessible to Japanese listeners) and its own brand of bubblegum pop. Watch their music video for "I Got a Boy" to get a sense of this award-winning group you won't want to miss!

Super Junior (슈퍼주니어)

Girl groups are not the only popular type of KPop group. Super Junior is a great example of a Korean boy band making waves in the KPop scene. Composed of twelve to thirteen members, Super Junior sometimes splits into smaller subgroups to make music suited to different audiences.

Check out their single "Sorry, Sorry" - the hit song is the group's best-selling single, and definitely something you can dance to!

Wonder Girls (원더걸스)

Wonder Girls is a four-girl group that had an interesting start to their music career. Their first big achievement was joining the Jonas Brothers on tour and performing an English version of their first hit "Nobody". This song launched the girls into international markets as it climbed the Billboard Hot 100.

Wonder Girls also made an effort to attract the Chinese and Japanese audiences so that even more listeners could join the fun! Listen to "Nobody" and you will quickly understand why Wonder Girls were the first South Korean group to soar on the Billboard Hot 100.

2NE1 (투애니원)

2NE1 - pronounced twenty-one or to anyone, depending on who you ask - first made a splash in the KPop scene with a song they wrote for an LG advertising campaign, making their music instantly accessible to millions of people. This all-female quartet has already won the "Song of the Year" award several times and has been very well received by critics, making them one of the best Kpop groups performing today.

Watch "I Am the Best" or "I Don't Care" - these two songs are the winners that really started to be critically acclaimed for the group, and they are definitely fun to listen to!

Shinee (샤이니)

Shinee is a boy band that has been releasing music in the Korean and Japanese markets since 2008. Although their music is undeniably catchy, they are best known for being fashion pioneers and setting trends with their elaborate stage outfits as well as their intense and rhythmic choreography.

Because they are famous for multiple reasons - singing, dancing, and having style - it's no surprise that Shinee created their own reality TV show and won a series of impressive awards. I recommend listening to "Replay", the single that launched the Shinee craze. Be warned - I guarantee you'll want to listen to it more than once!

T-ara (티아라)

You don't make a big Kpop group overnight. T-ara is well aware of this reality - the ladies of T-ara trained together for three years before starting!

T-ara started by releasing music from the Cinderella Man drama soundtrack, and they quickly progressed to producing award-winning singles like "Roly-Poly," which became one of the top charting songs in 2001. Listen to "Roly-Poly" and you'll hear what three years of perfecting the art of KPop sounds like!

Big Bang (빅뱅)

Big Bang is best known for its unique blend of KPop and hip-hop. A boy band formed in 2006, Big Bang is a veteran of the KPop scene and has won several awards at the Japanese MTV Video Awards and a popular Korean music festival called Mnet.

Several of the members diversified and released solo albums, allowing them to explore their own musical goals while releasing music with Big Bang. Take a look at their single "Lies" and you'll understand why this group is known as Korea's national boy band!

Kara (카라)

Kara is another Kpop group that has made the rounds in the neighborhood, so to speak - the group first came together in 2007, and the all-female group chose a name indicating a Greek word meaning "sweet melody." Kara had a bit of a rough start - their first album, The First Blooming, was not well received by critics or fans.

However, the group gained new members and released Rock U, a much more refined R&B sounding album. Kara is now one of the most well-known kpop groups in Korea. Check out their unique blend of sounds by listening to their first number one single, "Honey"!

2PM (투피엠)

2PM is a critically acclaimed boy band that split from a larger group called One Day - another group, 2AM, contains the remaining members of the original group. 2PM's music is undeniably impressive, but even more impressive is their dance technique which incorporates acrobatic moves that leave viewers shocked and wanting more.

Watch the video for their single "Go Crazy" and see for yourself how this group can move!

EXO (엑소)

EXO's mission is to make their music accessible to as many people as possible. They are so dedicated to this mission that the group splits into two subgroups, EXO-M and EXO-K, with "m" and "k" standing for Mandarin and Korean respectively.

This technique allows the group to focus on the Chinese and Korean audience, which means Mandarin speakers can also be part of the KPop sensation! Check out the single "Growl", EXO's 2013 hit, and you'll see why this twelve-member group is not an average boy band.

One of the best aspects of K-pop songs is when you start to understand what the song lyrics are about. That's when it helps to know a little Korean.

Moreover, learning Korean means being able to tap into an entirely new culture that you didn't have access to before. Korean music and television can be fun for everyone, even for people who don't speak the language.

As you start to understand different words and phrases and continue learning to speak Korean, songs, movies, and TV shows take on a whole new meaning and become infinitely more enjoyable.
