What do Milan, Paris, New York, London, and Tokyo have in common? They are all among the most important cities in fashion.

But nowadays, more and more fashion centers are emerging worldwide to challenge these cities. Among them is Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

It hosts the very popular fashion week twice a year. Fashion has always been part of Korean culture, but it has never been as important (or popular) as it is today. Its designers are increasingly known worldwide and to the general public in Seoul and elsewhere in Korea. They are known for their impeccable sense of everyday fashion, for both men and women.

Korean Fashion: Korean Style

Harmony and a sense of community are important traditional values in Korea, and you can see this intersection even in Korean fashion. This means that although there are hundreds of thousands of stores throughout Korea, many of them sell the same style of clothing. In any case, very similar clothing. This is also partly due to the fact that many clothing stores, especially the smaller ones, rely on local manufacturers. This can limit the variety of stores.

But that does not mean everyone on the streets of Korea wears the same outfit. While many share the same sense of Korean Style, there are also marked differences in these styles. Let’s examine the different types of Korean style in Korean fashion.

The Korean Style of the Hongdae Street

Although this particular style is not limited to those hanging out in the Hongdae area, it is the most common. Generally, it is more common among young people in their twenties. It is a kind of casual Streetwear look, mixing the aesthetics of rock and hip-hop. The upper part, in particular, is often wide and large in an Oversize style, but men also like the casual pants and shorts that go with it. Although it is a very unisex look, girls wear dresses and skirts that also fit the ulzzang look. Girls also like to mix more colors in their outfits instead of sticking to predominantly black every time. Otherwise, this look is popular among both men and women. You can easily buy this look in the many stores on the streets of Hongdae, or order our Korean Style collection online at the KPOP Shop.

Korean Clothing for the Top

Although Koreans are not deeply religious, their values are rooted in conservatism. Thus, to some extent, women are expected to act and look pure, or at least to have class. This means it is frowned upon for Korean women to dress too revealingly, especially on the upper part. In other words: cover your shoulders, chest, and stomach. Even better, do not wear clothes with an open back.

Of course, the rules in this regard are becoming more relaxed as Korean fashion and trends for Korean women evolve. Even if you won’t see many women wearing tops with open backs or tank tops, many of them still like this style nowadays. And although the chest remains covered, tops of this kind have become a big trend. They are especially appreciated when paired with high-waisted pants, shorts, and skirts.

Korean Clothing for the Bottom

On the other hand, the trend in Korea has absolutely been towards miniaturization of the lower body for many years. And there seems to be no change in the short term! Mini skirts, short shorts, and mini dresses are definitely in fashion. Unfortunately, this poses a problem for girls who have slightly wider hips or bigger buttocks, as the hems may even be too short for them to wear. But if Korean women like to show their legs, they generally wear underwear (or the skirts are equipped with them) to protect themselves from showing a bit too much.

Skirts are generally either tennis skirts or body skirts, in both cases usually high-waisted. For shorts, denim shorts are particularly popular.

The Korean Style Oversize

From tops to coats, and pants to dresses, Korean women love to wear big and wide clothes to hide their shapes. They are especially popular for casual use, even existing in the form of jumpsuit dresses, and focused on maximum comfort. They also offer a cute look but effortlessly. Many women like to combine an oversize Korean garment with a tighter garment, usually a t-shirt, blouse, or loose sweater, with jeans or a tight skirt. Others may wear an oversize top with loose bottoms, which is another type of popular Korean style gaining popularity among Koreans.

Korean Outfits in the Heat

Following the idea that you should not show shoulders or show too much at the chest, thin clothing was born. And by thin clothing, we mean wearing a simple t-shirt or a long-sleeved top under a spaghetti strap dress. Girls can either mix and match as they wish or find easily achievable sets for sale in any shop, usually at low prices. And this is not the only way they do this style of outfit. You can do it in all imaginable ways! Even lace dresses over pants are possible!

Korean Style Uniform

As you may already know, in Korea, you wear a school uniform throughout all your school years. But this school uniform is also part of daily Korean fashion, especially for women. The integral part of this look is the lined skirt, which can be a single color or plaid patterned. The possibilities to pair it are almost unlimited, from a simple t-shirt to a vest over a shirt.

Couple Clothing in Korea

And of course, it is a full fashion statement when a couple in Korea wears matching clothes. It is quite normal in Korea for couples to buy not only one matching item for the other but also complete outfits, from backpacks to shoes! So if you ever get a Korean bae, this might be a trend you’ll be part of too?

What is your favorite Korean style and who is the most stylish Korean you know?
