Wendy is the main vocalist of the group Red Velvet from the agency SM Entertainment. She lived in Canada where she auditioned several times to join the SM Entertainment label. It was only in 2012 that she was accepted into the agency, and she also became part of the SMROOKIES project. Since she lived in Canada, she speaks English very well.
When she was 11 years old, she and her family moved to Canada, where she lived for several years, then she moved to the United States, to Minnesota, to continue her university studies.
During her years of study, she participated in several musicals and was part of her high school choir. Singing is not just a talent for her; above all, it is her passion, which is why she auditioned to join the label. Thanks to the SMROOKIES project, she had several opportunities to showcase her talent, for example, she appears in a video promoting this project, where she sings "Speak Now" by Taylor Swift.
It is clear that she has always been active and practiced singing since a very young age; however, an accident put her singing career on hold for several months. In 2019, she was hospitalized after falling more than 2 meters during rehearsals. It was only eight months later that she returned to the stage alongside the other members.
As previously mentioned, Wendy lived in Canada and the United States, so during TV shows and radio programs, she is often questioned about her experience there. In November 2014, Red Velvet appeared as guests on a radio show (Idol True Color). During the show, the members were asked questions to get to know them better. When it was Wendy's turn, she was asked what her talents were. She replied that she could imitate people, especially Black people, since she had lived abroad, and then she demonstrated this "talent."
Her imitation was heavily criticized by international fans because it was perceived as a racist act. Unfortunately, even though it gave her a bad image, in 2018, during a TV show where she was invited with Seul Gi, she once again imitated, in a very stereotypical and even derogatory way, the way African Americans speak, which again upset international fans. It is then understood that the 2014 controversy taught her nothing, and questions arise about this behavior, which many perceive as racist. But to this day, we have not had any real explanations on this subject. The question remains open.
